I first met Chairman Lee in the late 1970s. During one my frequent visits to Seoul back then, I had the real pleasure and honor to meet him and talk about a number of topics of mutual interest including the US-Korea economic relationship.

From my first handshake with him, which was gentle yet firm, to the end of our first set of discussions, it was very clear to me that his vision is far bigger than his rather small physique. I could also sense and deeply appreciate his can-do spirit of optimism, which I surely shared.

In the years ahead I had the honor of introducing Chairman Lee to President Ronald Reagan and other American leaders. In all of my meetings he was a man of true vision for the U.S. Korean alliance and for South Korea‘s role in the world. He was both a remarkable entrepreneur and thought leader.

It is my sincere hope that the cooperative kinship of free peoples and free enterprises in our two great nations, the Republic of Korea and the United States of America, continues to span the ocean for generations to come. That would be one of the most fitting ways of honoring the late Chairman Lee and passing his legacy of vibrant entrepreneurship to the future generations.

Onward!
